How we build - We learn the problem before we shape the product.

We start with the part that’s still held together by notes, memory, or a vague sense that something isn’t working. Then we narrow the problem and build around how people already do things.

  • Start with the messy part. The pile nobody has sorted, the steps only one person remembers, the feeling that’s hard to put into words. That’s usually where a good product can help.
  • Stay close to the people using it. We talk with the people who use our apps and pay attention to the details that disappear when a product is designed from a distance.
  • Use technology with restraint. Every feature has to take something off your plate. If it doesn’t, it stays out.

Why Martinsburg?

It started with Martin’s bird.

A large hanging macaw lived in our son’s nursery. “Martin’s bird” became “Martinsburg” through a silly family joke, and when we started the company, the name came with it.
